WONDERLAND CROSS-BOUNDARY
WILDFIRE MITIGATION PROJECT

Over the next three years, the City of Boulder and the Boulder Watershed Collective will work with HOAs and residents in the Wonderland Hills area to implement wildfire risk-reduction measures on public and private lands. Funding comes from the Boulder County Strategic Fuels Mitigation Grant (SFMG) and the City of Boulder Climate Mitigation Tax, as well as match from local landowners:

  • SFMG: $201,619

  • City of Boulder: $181,486

  • Landowner match: $39,206

Project methods include:

  • Hardening homes and removing hazardous vegetation on private properties (for residents who choose to participate)

  • Mowing and cattle grazing for vegetation management on City of Boulder lands (OSMP and Parks & Recreation)

  • Supporting community organizing for long-term fire adaptation

This cross-boundary effort reduces risk across property lines—because wildfire doesn’t stop at ownership boundaries.

What to expect in the coming months

Funding has just been finalized and project partners are developing a detailed scope of work. Neighborhood-scale risk assessments will be conducted through the end of the year. The Boulder Watershed Collective will work with the City, HOAs, and homeowners to prioritize and coordinate various home hardening and defensible space projects. On City lands, expect to see cattle grazing, mowing, and targeted removal of junipers starting in Spring of 2026.

What you can do

  1. Get a free Wildfire Detailed Home Assessment (DHA). This will provide essential information about how to reduce risk on your property, and is the first step in establishing eligibility for upcoming reimbursement programs. Sign up here: https://bouldercolorado.gov/services/wildfire-home-assessment

  2. Stay Connected. Check this website for updates and to sign up for the project newsletter. Talk to your neighbors about wildfire mitigation and encourage them to sign up for a Detailed Home Assessment (DHA).

  3. Reach out with questions and ideas. If you’re interested in community organizing within your HOA or neighborhood, reach out to Kirin: kirin@boulderwatershedcollective.org. We can discuss ideas for preparedness events, evacuation drills, or support in getting your neighbors signed up for DHAs.
